“Twilight Adventures” takes viewers on an exploration of ocean and forest realms. In the serene depths of deep blue waters, ethereal children frolic with a rich array of marine life, while luminous white whales gracefully dance in the sea. The fantastical underwater world resembles a boundless universe, where glowing jellyfish, octopuses, and sea-born spirits weave through aquatic vegetation and coral reefs. Under IIDA's brush, the deep sea transforms from a cold, dark abyss into a vibrant realm of life and miraculous exploration. Meanwhile, in the forest, Aneko, a mushroom spirit, embarks on a journey into a perilous poisonous mushroom forest to find her lost brother, Chikino. Unexpectedly, she receives the kind help of poisonous mushroom spirits. In the end, not only does she reunite with her brother, but she also tastes a rare, long-lost red fruit. Through this adventure, she cultivates a resilient and courageous heart. The mushroom forest story unfolds like a fable: facing the unknown often brings fear and confusion, yet the process of exploration—though not always smooth—yields unexpected rewards for those who dare to try. Kiriko IIDA's works bring characters to life with elegant lines and soft light and shadow, creating spirited animals and innocent faces. In our fast-changing modern world, her whimsical fantasy realms convey values she sees as essential and eternal in life.
Born in Hokkaido, Kiriko IIDA has inherited the serenity and subtle beauty of the vast northern landscape in her artistic style. Whether portraying scenes of the snowy country or descending into the deep sea, her works consistently radiate a profound elegance and mystique. Undersea World is a surreal depiction of the deep sea rendered with dreamy brushstrokes. A pristine white whale glides gracefully through the waters, accompanied by travelers in small boats, a long-haired girl, and a slightly eerie skeletal figure. With deep blue-black tones as its foundation, the painting creates a mysterious yet fairy-tale-like underwater world, embodying IIDA's unique visual tension and imaginative space.
Mushroom Forest 11 employs a symmetrical composition, with the partial faces of the mushroom spirit girl, Aneko, framing the left and right sides of the piece. This highlights the delicate and dramatic emotional transition as Aneko finds her brother, Chikino. At the center, a mushroom spirit holds a daisy, symbolizing innocence and hope. The artwork uses bright tones and soft brushstrokes, harmonizing pinks and gradients of sky blue to create a dreamy and comforting atmosphere. The colorful mushroom spirits in the background, with simplified facial features and rounded contours, add playful and whimsical elements to the piece.
Whether portraying the emergence of new life in the deep sea or the adventures of mushroom spirits in the forest, IIDA's fantastical world resembles faint glimmers of light in the darkness. These glimmers reflect the purest curiosity for nature and the courage to explore the unknown in the hearts of viewers. In a chaotic contemporary society, IIDA’s art reminds us that true adventure is not found in distant places but in maintaining a heart willing to explore, understand, and appreciate the world. When we step forward with curiosity, even the smallest light can guide us to discover the most precious landscapes of life.
