1980s is a time of emancipating the mind. The reform and opening-up as well as the emancipation of the mind have resulted in some artistic movements one after another. In the ten years from the Star Art Exhibition in 1979 to the Trendy Fine Arts Movement in 1985, then to the Modern Art Exhibition in 1989, the circle of fine arts has witnessed its splendid 1980s due to enthusiastic joint creation of the artists. With his intellectual independent thinking and keen point of view, Mr. Wen Pulin witnessed, recorded and devoted himself to such a dynamic era. Since 1980s, Mr. Wen Pulin has started to record Chinese modern art activities, events and the life and creations of some important artists in any way of video, pictures, literatures or interviewing tapes, etc, and finished the “Archive of Chinese Avant-Garde Art” after his 20 years’ efforts, as well as set up “WEN PULIN-Archive of Chinese Avant-Garde Art” in Cornell University, U.S.A. in 2005 and in University of California, U.S.A. in 2007 respectively. It reproduced in an actual and vivid way some important historical events which happened during the 20 years’ modern art history, and becomes the most authoritative and history-reflecting literature for studying modern history of Chinese art. Therefore it is a vivid collection of Avant-Garde art history.

“Emancipation” is a concentration of “WEN PULIN-Archive of Chinese Avant-Garde Art” regarding the history of 1980s. The archive has concentratedly demonstrated, by means of pictures and videos, all art behaviors concerning the Earthquake since 1980s, which was initiated and recorded by Mr. Wen Pulin, one of the earliest practitioners for Chinese avant-garde art, and “The Last Supper”--a behavior art organized and executed by Li Shan and Sun Liang, et al from Shanghai, and at the same time reproduced in an actual way some important historical figures and cases concerning the 1989 First China Modern Art Exhibition. The full and accurate historical data and literature, abundant pictures and rare videos have indeed made the exhibition boast higher academic level and great value for collection.
