Faced with the challenge of globalization, Taiwan has already established a clear position for itself as an international technology industry leader. Indeed, the clarity of this position is such that it has also become the way in which the rest of the world views Taiwan. Over the last two decades, this mindset has gradually been applied to the field of artistic creativity. In addition to utilizing technological advances to echo artistic diversity, the plan is to also take advantage of Taiwan’s natural high tech strengths. As a result, as Taiwanese art grows globally it will become a composite of distinctive local characteristics and international languages, as with such phenomenon as US Pop Art or Japanese Manga Art. Since 2000, special significance has been given to New Media Art, resulting in extensive discussion and research into the field, making it one of the main trends in the development of contemporary Taiwanese art over the last few years. This phenomenon has successfully encouraged and facilitated the cultivation of numerous outstanding new media artists in Taiwan, mimicking the growth of the technology industry.

The “Breathing Deeply” exhibition is curated by Sean C.S. Hu an invited 8 outstanding new media artists from Taiwan to display work, including Yuan Goang-ming, Chen Yung-hsien, Diing-Wuu Wu Walis, Tao Ya-lun, Wang Te-yu, Lin Chien-jung, Chen Wan-jen, and Huang Po-chih. These were instructed to address subjects ranging from discussions of the meaning of life for the individual to the relative position and existential values of people living in nature and the city, expressing experiences and considerations of the essential nature of existence faced by people in different situations. When the “new” element of new media art, is compared to the “classical” proposition on the sense of being or existence, what is highlighted is the time transcendent importance of the latter. This also explains how people in different times gradually come to an understanding of the meaning of life in situations of confusion and lack of control. “The process of nihilation achieves its objective of freedom, but as part of that process not only is existence itself transformed from freedom to self-orientation, but the world around which it revolves is also transformed. This ensures that it is constantly shown somewhere in the contradiction between reality and possibility, realizing non-stop self transcendence and transcendence of others objects.
