Night Landscape - Peng Hsienhsiang’s Solo Exhibition
Aug 15 - Sep 13, 2015
Soka Art Taipei
After two years, Soka Art Taipei is hosting Peng Hsien-Hsiang's solo exhibition "Night Landscape" once again after showing his works at Soka Art Beijing. This exhibition originates from all the landscape pieces Peng created throughout the years. Peng's night landscape does not really mean landscape at night, but is rather a reflection and metaphor of a spiritual state. It is a dark and confused state. An abstract style that appears from the traditional ink art ambience, or the image’s landscape serenely floating like fog… This untraditional landscape vocabulary symbolizes Peng's thoughts on contemporary landscape paintings of Chinese ink art. It also symbolizes the split between men and nature as well as the split between contemporary time and classical culture. The exhibition will be held for four weeks from August 15 to September 13. The new address for Soka Art Taipei is: 350 Tiding Blvd Section 2, Taipei City.
Born in 1968, Peng Hsien-Hsiang grew up in a traditional Hakka family. This background influenced his thoughts on art creations later on in life. Furthermore, Peng went on to create his famous "Hakka Series" in the 90s. In recent years, he has taken on night landscapes as a theme, drawing attention away from external matter. Peng turns toward thoughts on his own life experience and nature, returning to the essence of being human. He portrays the plainest side of life by utilizing the drybrush technique in oil painting and the texture of the canvas. When Peng paints landscapes and stars, the light on top is always man's starting point in the exploration of life. The mobile, shiny stars fill up the mountains, hinting at the trails of time. He contrasts the eternal stars with the short lives of men. Peng's landscape is not a panoramic view with grand mountains and rivers, but is rather a presentation of his state of mind through selective scenes. Peng's landscape is an exploration of serenity and the pursuit of the eternity of life. His landscape pieces break the link with the reality of nature and show a different side to landscapes from a purely spiritual state.
"Night Landscape - Peng Hsien-Hsiang’s Solo Exhibition" hosted by Soka Art Taipei will be held for the duration of four weeks. It is yet another one of Peng's solo exhibitions after the exhibition "Back to the Beginning" in Beijing in 2013. Soka will present a total of 15 pieces created by Peng over the past two years.
