Jun 30 - Jul 29, 2018

Beijing

By The Tide is the second exhibition of Sheng Meibing after the large-scale exhibition in National Museum in 2013. This exhibition includes Sheng Meibing’s works from early 90s up to now which show the his development and orientation in art. Based in Jinling, Sheng Meibing’s works are full of ‘vivid artistic conception of literati’ for his rich knowledge of culture of south-east China, he shows the depth of thought and unique temperament of a modern lieratus with oil paints and canvas. In a traditional study of Ming dynasty, the ornaments have to be leisurely, lively and elegant, the persuit of harmony of nature and humanity integrate into window lattices, stones, ink, plaques, carpentries, tea and liquor. There is also a perfect Ming study in Sheng Meibing’s mind, which is through ancient and modern, mobile, style-freed: it could be indoor or outdoor, there could be gentlemen and farmers, small bridges and industrial ports, all of these scenes in his ‘study’ flow out from his brushes onto the canvas lively, even flowers must be put into vase with fish pattern from Cizhou kiln for aesthetic. Sheng Meibing seems one of the Four Maters of Ming who fills his works with flowing temperament of the nature, keeps a pure land for contemporary painting, just as the title ‘By The Tide’: watching the tide by the riverside tranquilly, no matter the tide comes and goes.
