Soka Art Taipei

Following the “Hsi ShihpinInvisible Stars of the Hydra” solo exhibition at Soka Art Taipei in 2017, Soka Art will be launching Hsi's new solo exhibition adventure on November 6, 2021. Hsi opened the prelude to this exhibition with a short poem - "Ordinary men are traveling into space, and the universe is full of unknown possibilities for tomorrow.". He once again built the exhibition hall into a narrative intertwining the mundane and fantastic, leading visitors on a gorgeous fantasy journey about exploration and the unknown.

In the space that he has imagined, there sits the work, "Gem Universe 1 ~ 7 stars". Star No. 1 is circularly connected by six rings with different patterns, so its appearance constantly changes as it rotates, looking like a different star from different angles. Star No. 2 is the same double triangular cone from all angles. Each side diverges around a hexagonal star like a snowflake, and then superimposes various geometric shapes to form a window-like basket shape. Star No 3 features a more lively appearance - it may look like a snowflake, a dandelion, or a pentagram, showing its true brilliance in the endless night sky. Star No. 4 is a Gemini, dividing into itself. Star No. 5 is a gem; No. 6 gave birth to triplets; and No. 7 is a unique heart shape. Riding a spaceship-shaped chariot, they shuttle between stars to explore unknown realms full of awe.

Hsih once said, "The world is a memory palace composed of multiple components. In one moment, I was wearing beautiful warm fur in the snowy castle. The next moment, I felt the heat of the stars at the silver train station in the center of the universe. All people involved in the fantasy world have to change their identity, gender, and race countless times. The fantasy world has no limitations." In Hsi Shih-Pin's works, we can view how he deconstructs the vanishing of daily realities, and then reorganizes the "memories" of wonderful imaginations. These memories are cut and spliced by geometric complex symbolic patterns to explore new meanings of multiple elements in a specific memory. His works sit somewhere between two-dimensional and three-dimensional; they can be regarded as the combination of plural images or the separation of single images. Hsi believes that sculpture, as a highly realistic creative practice, will naturally evoke some things that are divorced from reality—things that do not exist, and even transcend imagination.

It is through artistic creation that Hsi Shih-Pin explores and discovers even more new possibilities in life. He once said that his way of creation is a process of repeated accumulation - he starts from the details and builds them into a whole before disassembling the whole back into details. It is this cycle that unleashes an endless creative energy. From November 6 2021 (Saturday) to January 1, 2022 (Saturday), come to Soka Art Gallery to experience a sensory world transcending imagination at Hsi Shih-Pin's new solo exhibition!
