DISCOVERY丨Tatsuya Yokosaka Solo Exhibition
Sep 30 - Nov 04, 2023
Soka Art is honored to invite Japanese artist Tatsuya Yokosaka to hold his solo exhibition, “DISCOVERY”, from September 30th to November 4th. An opening reception will take place at 4 p.m. on September 30th, during which the artist himself, Tatsuya Yokosaka, will be present to guide guests through his works and share his creative philosophy. Soka Art sincerely invites everyone to join this artistic journey across time and space with Tatsuya Yokosaka.
The stage for this exhibition “DISCOVERY”, is set in a world 100 or 200 years after human extinction for certain reasons. In this world, there’s a man who collects scarce data and parts in the ruins, transforming classic Porsche cars into time machines and trying to return to the past. Through his works, Tatsuya Yokosaka presents a brand-new world, witnessing human wisdom and prosperity while also symbolizing the end of an era and the journey to find new possibilities.
Tatsuya Yokosaka subtly incorporates elements from the 1980s, legendary figures, and classic animated characters into his work, creatively modifying the iconic Porsche 911 series, aiming to traverse time and return to the past. This concept deeply resonates with his previous work, “Prometheus”. “Prometheus” is a science fiction film centered around a spaceship and its crew embarking on a journey into outer space based on star maps found in ancient Earth artifacts, attempting to discover the origin of humanity. This theme aligns with the exhibition's title, “DISCOVERY”, as Tatsuya Yokosaka explained, "The name makes us link to ships exploring new worlds, just like spaceships or expedition ships of the Age of Discovery." Furthermore, the word Discovery holds special significance and common language within Japanese otaku culture, representing a significant departure. It reflects Tatsuya Yokosaka's motivation for his artwork, adding subtle connotations and inspiration to the exhibition.
Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1981, Tatsuya Yokosaka is known for his unique creativity and ideas, fusing various cultural elements in his work. He aims to evoke nostalgia and humor in his works, offering a fresh perspective to his audience. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which stopped him from visiting art supply stores to purchase painting materials, Yokosaka tried his best to source what he could get at home, including folders, unfinished canvases, and other items available. He even employed the technique used in cel animation, using the colors and accessories from classic animated elements to successfully incorporate the iconic animation elements of the 1980s into his works. This revival of classic elements adds a playful and childlike quality to his artwork, allowing people to revisit cherished characters and animated scenes.
As Tatsuya Yokosaka said, "If my work can resonate with the audience and find novelty and joy within that resonance, that would be wonderful." To demonstrate Yokosaka's creative philosophy, Soka Art has set up a Porsche on-site at this exhibition, which the artist himself had transformed into a time machine. This installation reflects his imagination of time travel and invites viewers to journey to the world of 20XX. Soka Art sincerely invites you to participate in this transcendent artistic journey, ponder the value of human wisdom, and contemplate the importance of seeking new discoveries in uncharted territories.
