Freud once wrote that the artist's creation is like a dream-like transfer and inversion in the book The Interpretation of Dreams, so the work itself is a reproduction of the artist's inner subconscious. Faraway is Zhang Yingnan's first solo exhibition in Taipei, which expresses the artist's mourning and beauty in the simple life, allowing the viewer to enter the world of imageries, from the past to the present, the night to the day; the visual presentation and its gradual disappearance is both illusory and real, as if to obtain a desire for loneliness and future. He uses images and memories to understand the relationship between the world and him through painting. The architecture of space has been transformed into the way of memory existence, a state of multi-dimensional overlapping and interlacing. Zhang's composition is imaginative; In this March, his works were presented by Soka Art at Art Basel Hong Kong and achieved great success. In addition, the work "Mirror Heart" has become the poster of the film "One Man's Collection", which have been collected by famous musician and collector Yao Qian seven years ago.
Zhang Yingnan was born in the 1980s in Beijing. His colour and composition are less direct and passionate than other young artists. Zhang's work is filled with his philosophical reflections, and always possesses a indescribable sense of loneliness and serenity. The unique style in Zhang's paintings is profoundly tied to his childhood memory: Zhang moved to the small town Baoji at the age of ten and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in the provincial capital Xi'an. He experienced the dramatic difference in human relationships between the urban and rural life---the way in which urban dwellers interact is far less intimated and genuine than those who live in the collective courtyard.
The artist often construct spaces in his painting to hide and interweave the memories from the past. The world in his painting shows a strong sense of loss, whether it is an empty factory building, the high and low-rise skyscrapers, or a floor-to-ceiling window--it is always full of loneliness and sadness. Through these constructions, the work captures the psychological state of society: the alienation between people, the uneasiness of the future and the sympathy for the family, which drive our generations into the depth of helplessness. The artist is like a director, and every scene accompanying him is a scene set which constantly emerges and vanishes, trying to calm the viewers and slowly guide them into his work.
The work The Confessional is based on the spatial concept and is specifically constructed between the fiction and the reality under the transformation by the artist. The work At dawn draws on the beginning point of all artistic origins. In this work, the proportion of the approximation is used to represent the past and the present. The scenery in the distance represents art and beauty, the book in the painting represents the religion, while the yellow lines symbolise science and the development of human civilisation.
This evolution process is more important to Zhang Yingnan as a creator. What is art? The artist looks for its answer every day, which, perhaps, can never be found in his current life journey. However, thanks to such searching process, he begins to realise that the art he loves will continue to change. Everyone has had loneliness at all stages of life, but the artist turns loneliness into colour, which is the real life he experiences. The artist's painting space also tells his thoughts about his home, and reflects his own self-observation and cognition through different spaces. At 4 o'clock on the afternoon of 12/08, Soka Art sincerely invites you to come and experience Zhang Yingnan's "Going to the Distance" exhibition to realise the dialogue between painting and self.
