Running On The Sidelines - Artists Group Exhibition
Feb 25 - Mar 25, 2012
Soka Art Taipei
Silas FONG is interested in the topics of time and space. Much of his works explore the urban city life and the interpersonal relationships within. In 'Waiting', the artist records people at Time Square, a familiar meeting point in Hong Kong. Stemming from the idea that economic effect and efficiency have become dominant factors in time measurement, the work looks at the changing emotions the subjects go through in the act of waiting. In 'Stolen Times for Sale' Fong attempted to steal time from strangers by disrupting the running of an elevator during rush hour. As he interrupts the closing of doors, he filmed the passengers' reactions. In a performance, the artist then sold the captured stolen times with prices accorded to the duration, number of people involved, their age, appearance and response. The work questions the value we place on time.
KWAN Sheung Chi
In 'One Million', the Kwan Sheung Chi counts a stack of HKD 1,000 banknotes repeatedly to a million. 'Left vs. Right' is a thousand games of rock, paper, scissors between the artist's left and right hand. The self-explanatory title of 'Drinking a Glass of Hot Chocolate with a Fork' depicts the artist's attempt to drink with an ill-matched utensil. 'Everything Goes Wrong for the Poor Couple' was a 34-hour performance that features Kwan and Wong Wai Yin. Based on socio-realist Cantonese movies from the 1950s and 60s, the couple acts out five freeze-frames from popular tragedies that dealt with issues of social and family ethics. Through his work, we are invited to be witnesses of a life and to come up with exit strategies from our dualistic mind-set.
Ivy MA
Details in everyday life that often goes unnoticed, on the contrary, are central to Ivy Ma's art. The artist works on movie stills of mundane scenes and takes on the role of an editor. As the images are magnified, the inkjet prints become blurry with visible grains. Ma would add details using graphite or literally rub out characters to get away from a narrative. In the 'Lily' series, the artist employed more pastels to emphasize the painterly effect. With the artist's alterations, the images are no longer mere reproductions of an existing narrative but offer an experience of observation.
Nadim ABBAS
'Photo Mirror Test (Revisited)' is a diptych of two photographs. The work has been developed out of a series of work where 3D sets are viewed through framed devices to mimic photographic images. The right panel is an image of a reversed sink and chair, as if seen in a bathroom mirror. The left panel is of the said photograph positioned above a sink, in the place of a mirror. The juxtaposed images are an experiment with the possibilities of documentation.
Morgan WONG
‘Plus-Minus-Zero’ arose out of Morgan Wong’s residency in Sapporo. Exploring the ideas of time, distance, technology and travel, the video sees Wong walking backwards and anticlockwise in an attempt to reverse the time difference between Hong Kong and Japan.
South HO
Over-exposed, well-lit subways are regular, yet sometimes surreal, sightings within the Hong Kong cityscape. 'Into Light' this set of black and white photographs of pedestrian tunnels at night forms the first part of metaphorical works where South Ho explores the topic of 'life'. 'Impermanence' is second inthe series. Through documenting the changing colours of the sky/atmosphere, 'Impermanence' refers to mortality and change as a constant in nature.
KONG Chun Hei
Kong Chun Hei's ink drawings are often of objects that escape our daily imagination. Meticulous attention is paid to recording his surroundings, in the hopes of realizing and grasping that which has been disregarded by habit and thus left unnoticed. 'Snow' refers to the display of electromagnetic noise on analog television. The work is a looped animation composed of 20 unique ink drawings of the static patterns.
